John 10:19-24 – The Jews who heard these words were again
divided. 20 Many of them
said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?” But others
said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s
Colonnade. The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will
you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
John 9:16 – Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is
not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How
can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.
John 1:24-25 – Now the Pharisees who had been sent questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the
Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
John 20:31 – But these are written that
you may believe that Jesus
is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his
name.
Application:
- · The Pharisees started from their entrenched position and ruled out the possibility of Jesus being from God. Others started from the fact of the “signs” and ruled out the possibility of His being a sinner.
- · “The Messiah” means “the Anointed One”. People were looking for not just an anointed one but the Anointed One, the Messiah.
- · The whole Gospel of John is written to show the truth of Jesus’ Messiahship and to present Him as the Son of God, so that the readers may believe in Him.
