Joshua
22:3-5 – You have
not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been
careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God. And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers,
as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your
possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. Only be very careful to
observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and
to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your
heart and with all your soul.”
Joshua
1:13 – “Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of
rest and will give you this land.’
Isaiah 43:22 – “Yet you did not
call upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel!
Deuteronomy 6:5 – You shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart and with
all your soul and with all your might.
Application:
- · Rest was an important Old Testament concept, implying secure borders, peace with neighboring countries and absence of threat to life and well-being within the land.
- · Both Moses and Joshua saw that obedience to the laws of God would require love and service from the heart.
- · Not call…been weary means apparently their prayers were halfhearted.
- · Love for God and neighbor is built on the love that the Lord has for His people and on His identification with them. Such love is to be total, involving one’s whole being.
