Mark 3:3-6 - And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
Mark 2:7,17 - “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”… And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Application:
· The question, “Which is better, to preserve life by healing or to destroy life by refusing to heal?” is ironic since, whereas Jesus was ready to heal, the Pharisees were plotting to put Him to death.
· In Jewish theology even the Messiah could not forgive sins, and Jesus’ forgiveness of sin was a claim to deity—which they considered to be blasphemous.
· A self-righteous man does not realize his need for salvation, but an admitted sinner does.
