Destined To Die Once, And After That To Face Judgment

Hebrews 9:27-28 - And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

2 Corinthians 5:10 – For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Application:

· I will die once as a consequence of sin. I will face judgment after death. Christ has brought me salvation from sin and judgment.
· The extent to which I please Christ corresponds to the measure of the rewards I will receive
· The clear anticipation of Christ’s return calls me to perseverance

Presence

Hebrews 9:24-28 - For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Romans 8:34 - Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Hebrews 4:3 - For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest,’” although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Application:

· I can rejoice with the certainty that I will never be condemned
· The rest God calls me to enter is not my rest but His rest, which He invites me to share
· The clear anticipation of Christ’s return calls me to perseverance

Copies Of The Heavenly Things

Hebrews 9:19-23 - For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Exodus 24:8 - And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Leviticus 17:11 - For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

Hebrews 8:5 - They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”

Application:

· Only after I agree to obey the Lord can I participate in His covenant with Him
· Atonement is a gracious gift. Atonement ransoms my life from the deserved judgment of the Lord
· Christ entered with His own blood the sanctuary of God’s presence

Will

Hebrews 9:15-18 - Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.

Exodus 24:8 - And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Application:

· Since Christ’s death has been duly attested, the promised eternal inheritance is available to me
· The payment of sin’s penalty requires a death
· Only after I agree to obey the Lord can I participate in His covenant with Him

Already Here

Hebrews 9:11-14,27-28 - But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God…And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Hebrews 10:1 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

Application:

· Christ introduced the new order with its new priesthood, new sanctuary and new sacrifice
· Christ brought salvation, in all its glorious fullness, for me on the cross
· Christ was the one who offered the sacrifice, and He was the sacrifice itself

The Way

Hebrews 9:8-10 - By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Hebrews 10:1 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

Application:

· Jesus is the only way to God, and He alone can provide access to God
· The very repetition of the sacrifices bore testimony that the perfect, sin-removing sacrifice had not yet been offered
· Christ introduced the new order with its new priesthood, new sanctuary and new sacrifice

Cherubim Of The Glory

Hebrews 9:5-7 - Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.

Exodus 25:17 - “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth.

Leviticus 16:1-2,34 - The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died, and the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat…And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Application:

· Atonement is an act of grace where God makes those who were once alienated from Him now one with Him. That God’s throne is capped with this signifies His great mercy
· The word for atonement cover is the same word used of Christ
· The Israelites had to make atonement annually. Christ became my atonement once and forever.

Ark Of The Covenant

Hebrews 9:3-4 – Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.

Exodus 30:1 - “You shall make an altar on which to burn incense; you shall make it of acacia wood.

Exodus 25:10,17 - “They shall make an ark of acacia wood. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height…“You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth.

Application:

· The fragrant smoke of incense symbolized the prayers of God’s people
· The ark symbolized the throne of the Lord who chose to dwell among His people
· Atonement is an act of grace where God makes those who were once alienated from Him now one with Him. That God’s throne is capped with this signifies His great mercy.

Lampstand

Hebrews 9:1-4 - Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.

Exodus 25:30,40 - And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before me regularly… And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.

Exodus 26:31 - “And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it.

Application:

· The bread represented the fruits of Israel’s labors being consecrated to God and acknowledgment that all such fruit came by God’s blessing
· The tabernacle symbolically illustrated the only way sinners may approach a Holy God and find forgiveness
· Christ’s death removed the separation between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place so I can have direct access to the presence of God

Forefathers

Hebrews 8:8-9 - For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

Exodus 19:5-6 - Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Exodus 20:3-7,9-10,12-14,17 - “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain…Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates…“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery…“You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”

Application:

· Participation in the divine blessings is conditioned on obedience added to faith
· God’s people, both individually and collectively, are to be set apart
· The worship of the one true God is the only acceptable belief and practice
· Since other gods are not to be worshiped, making idols of them would be equally sinful
· God will not put up with rivalry or unfaithfulness
· I am not to swear falsely, dishonestly, or deceptively, in God’s name (or for any reason at all)
· Every aspect of my life is to reflect that I belong to the Lord and I am sustained by Him, including rest
· I am to prize, care for and show respect for my parents
· I am not to plan and deliberately murder (or plan my anger and deliberately be angry)
· Adultery (and lust) is a sin against God as well as the marriage partner
· Coveting values things over trust and obedience to the Lord as my provider

Delight In Doing His Will

Hebrews 8:7-9 - For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

Hebrews 10:1 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

Luke 22:20 - And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 - “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Ezekiel 36:26-27 - And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Romans 8:2-4 - For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Application:

· The Mosaic law can never make a person perfect since it is but a shadow of the true form
· The new covenant is the fuller administration of God’s saving grace founded on and sealed by the death of Jesus
· As the old covenant was observed by the blood of sacrificial animals, so the new would be observed by the blood of Christ
· The new covenant should govern my life
· The glorious basis of the new covenant is God forgiving my sins
· What He requires of His people He always provides
· God bestows His Spirit to enable the human spirit to do His will
· The evidence that I am in Christ is that the power of sin has been broken in my life by the work of the Holy Spirit
· God’s aim in sending His Son was that I might be enabled to embody the true and full intentions of the law

The Covenant Of Which He Is Mediator Is Superior

Hebrews 8:6 - But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

Luke 22:20 - And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Hebrews 9:15 - Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

Hebrews 12:22-24 - But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

· The new covenant should govern my life
· The glorious basis of the new covenant is God forgiving my sins
· Only after the people obeyed the Lord could they participate in His covenant with them

Set Up By The Lord, Not By Man

Hebrews 8:1-5 - Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”

Leviticus 16:34 - And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Hebrews 9:13-14 - For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Hebrews 10:1 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

Hebrews 12:25 - See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

Exodus 25:40 – And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.

Application:

· The heavenly sanctuary built by God corresponds to the Most Holy Place in Moses tabernacle
· Jesus was both the high priest and the sacrifice itself
· The earthly tabernacle was a lesser copy of the heavenly pattern shown to Moses
· The Mosaic law can never make a person perfect since it is but a shadow of the true form
· Since I have greater revelation, I have greater responsibility and therefore greater danger
· The tabernacle symbolically illustrated the only way sinners may approach a holy God and find forgiveness

· The new covenant has been solemnized by the blood of Christ
· The new covenant should govern my life
· My sins are forgiven in the new covenant. I am not ignorant of Him. I have true knowledge of Him.

Mind

Hebrews 7:20-21 - And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’”

Numbers 23:19 - God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

1 Samuel 15:29 - And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.”

Malachi 3:6 - “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Romans 11:29 - For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

Psalm 110:4 - The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Application:

· God is not a man that He should lie describes how God does not change and the integrity of His Word
· God has real emotions
· God remains faithful to His covenant
· God does not change His mind with reference to His call

The Power Of An Indestructible Life

Hebrews 7:13-19 - For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

Revelation 5:5 - And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Psalm 110:4 - The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Galatians 3:21 - Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.

Hebrews 10:1,19-22 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near…Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 3:5-6 - Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Hebrews 4:16 - Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Colossians 1:3-8 - We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

Application:

· Jesus has triumphed
· Christ is king-priest in the order of Melchizedek
· The law reveals sin which alienates me from God and shows that I need salvation
· The sacrifice prescribed by the law prefigured Christ’s ultimate sacrifice
· Failure to persevere reveals that a person is actually not a child of God, whereas perseverance is the hallmark of His children
· Because Christ our high priest has experienced human temptation, He stands ready to give immediate and sympathetic help when we are tempted
· To draw near to God, I need to show allegiance to Him, faith without hesitation, freedom from guilt and inner cleansing
· I have a hope stored up for me in heaven

In The Order Of Melchizedek, Not In The Order Of Aaron

Hebrews 7:3-12 - He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

Hebrews 10:1 - For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

Psalm 110:4 - The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Application:

· The sacrifice prescribed by the law prefigured Christ’s ultimate sacrifice
· Christ is king-priest in the order of Melchizedek

King of Righteousness, King of Peace

Hebrews 6:19-7:2 - We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

Leviticus 16:2 - The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died, and the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

Isaiah 9:6-7 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Jeremiah 23:5-6 - “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

The Coming Age

Hebrews 6:4-9 - For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.

Mark 10:29-30 - Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

John 15:5 - I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

1 Corinthians 10:14 - Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Application:

· The present age is evil, but the coming righteous age will begin with the second advent of Christ and continue forever
· Apart from Christ I can do nothing of eternal value. Apart from Christ I am unable to produce spiritual fruit
· Does my life give evidence of genuine spiritual renewal?
· I cannot participate in idolatry and then think that I will receive eternal life on that day

Impossible

Hebrews 6:1-6 – Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits. For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Acts 6:6 - These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

Hebrews 10:26-27,32-33 – For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries...But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.

Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Hebrews 5:11,14 - About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing…But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Application:

· Laying on of hands is done for healing, the gift of the Spirit and commissioning to a ministry
· Would I suffer loss and persecution unflinchingly? Am I deeply concerned for others?
· Salvation by grace through faith is not something I can accomplish myself. Faith, no less than grace, is a gift of God
· Have I become dull of hearing?
· Have I progressed in my spiritual life? Am I a Christian of sound judgment and discernment?
· To reject Christ’s sacrifice for sins is to reject the only sacrifice; there is no other.

Instruction About Baptisms

Hebrews 5:12-6:2 - For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Matthew 28:19-20 - Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Acts 8:14-16 - Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 6:6 - These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 - For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Mark 6:5 – And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

John 5:25 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

John 11:25-26 - Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Application:

· Have I progressed in my spiritual life? Am I sound of judgment and discernment?
· Has my conscience been purified from deeds that cannot save due to human sinfulness?
· Baptism is part of the process of the great commission
· If I belong to Christ, I have the Holy Spirit
· Laying on of hands is done for healing, the gift of the Spirit and commission to a ministry
· Laying on of hands fans into flame the gift of God
· Jesus chose not to do miracles where there was unbelief
· The spiritually dead will hear Jesus message and believe
· If I have genuine faith in Christ I will live

He Learned Obedience From What He Suffered

Hebrews 5:8-11 – Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

Hebrews 2:10 - For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 6:12 - And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Application:

· Jesus obedience to His Father in the face of each temptation taught Him obedience so that His human moral ability was strengthened
· As a human being, Jesus needed to live His life and obey God to become the perfect sacrifice for sins
· Have I become dull of hearing? Am I progressing? Am I spiritually sluggish? Am I mentally lazy?
· Do I imitate those who received the promise through faith?
