Favoritism

James 2:9-10 - But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

James 2:1 - My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.

Galatians 3:10 - All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."

Conclusions:
  • God does not show favoritism—nor should believers
  • The law is the expression of the character and will of God; therefore to violate one part of the law is to violate God’s will and thus His whole law
  • All who rely on observing the law refers to legalists—those who refuse God’s offer of grace and insist on pursuing righteousness through works
  • All who rely on observing the law are under a curse because no one under the law ever perfectly kept the law
  • God’s blessing has never been earned, but has always been freely given

Application:

  • Do you show favoritism?
  • Do you violate any part of the law?
  • Do you rely on observing the law?
