All Who Hate Me Love Death

Proverbs 8:36-9:2,17 – But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.” Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table…“Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!”

Proverbs 1:30-31 – Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

1 Peter 2:4-5 – As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Application:

  • ·         To refuse wisdom’s “advice” is to suffer the consequences of one’s own foolish “schemes”.
  • ·         Believers are living stones that make up a spiritual temple in which, as a holy priesthood, they offer up spiritual sacrifices.
  • ·         The banquet prepared by Lady Folly seems poorer than the wine and meat of wisdom.

Find Life

Proverbs 8:33-35 – Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord.

John 5:39-40 – You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

Proverbs 3:1-2 – My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

John 1:4 – In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Application:

  • ·         The Jewish leaders studied Scripture in minute detail. Despite their reverence for the very letter of Scripture, they did not recognize the one to whom Scripture bears supreme testimony.
  • ·         Fear of the Lord brings health to the body and “adds length to life”. When Solomon prayed for wisdom, God promised him riches as well as long life if he obeyed God’s commands.
  • ·         “Life” is one of the great concepts of this Gospel. The Greek word for “life” is found 36 times in John, while no other New Testament book uses it more than 17 times. Life is Christ’s gift, and He, in fact, is “the life”.

Blessed

Proverbs 8:32 – “Now then, my children, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.

Psalm 1:1-2 – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 119:1 – Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.

Application:

  • ·         The Psalter begins by proclaiming the blessedness of the godly and ends by calling all living things to praise God in his earthly and heavenly sanctuaries.
  • ·         “Meditates on His law” means seeking guidance for life in God’s law rather than in the deliberations of the wicked.
  • ·         Blessed are those whose ways are blameless

Delighting In Mankind

Proverbs 8:27-31 – I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.

Revelation 3:14 – “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.

Job 38:6-7 – On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

John 1:1,4 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Colossians 1:15,18-20 – The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation…And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Genesis 1:26,28 – Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”… God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Application:

  • ·         The Greek word for “ruler” can mean first in point of time or first in rank.
  • ·         When the earth was created, the angels were there to sing the praises of the Creator, but Job was not. He should therefore not expect to be able to understand even lesser aspects of God’s plans for the world and for humankind.
  • ·         Humans, made in the image of God, represented the climax of creation.
  • ·         “In the beginning” was a deliberate echo to link God’s action in behalf of the world through Jesus Christ with His first work, the creation of the world.
  • ·         Life is Christ’s gift, and He, in fact, is “the life”.
  • ·         Just as the firstborn son had certain privileges and rights in the Biblical world, so also Christ has certain rights in relation to all creation—priority, preeminence and sovereignty.
  • ·         Christ is supreme in the church as the one on whom it is dependent.
  • ·         For Paul “fullness” meant the totality of God with all His powers and attributes.
  • ·         So when Christ died on the cross, He made peace possible between God and humans, and He restored in principle the harmony in the physical world, though the full realization of the latter will come only when Christ returns.
  • ·         Humans are the climax of God’s creative activity, and God has “crowned them with glory and honor” and made them rulers over the rest of His creation.
  • ·         Humankind goes forth from the hands of the Creator under His divine benediction—flourishing, filling the earth with their kind, and exercising dominion over the other earthly creatures.

When The World Came To Be

Proverbs 8:23-29 – I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Genesis 1:7 – So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.

Application:

  • ·         Wisdom was already there when God began to create the world.
  • ·         “In the beginning” was a deliberate echo to link God’s action in behalf of the world through Jesus Christ with His first work, the creation of the world. The Jews, however, used the word “logos” to refer to the “word” of God by which He created the world and governs it and to refer to the law of God that He gave the Israelites to be their life. Of the law the rabbis said that it was “created before the world”, that it “lay on God’s bosom while God sat on the throne of glory”, that it was divine, that it was God’s “firstborn” through whom He “created the heaven and the earth”, that it is “light” and “life” for the world and that it “is truth”.
  • ·         “And it was so” was the only possible outcome, whether stated or implied, to God’s “Let there be”.

Prosperity

Proverbs 8:18-21 – With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full.

Proverbs 3:1-2 – My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

Job 28:18 – Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

Psalm 5:8 – Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies—make your way straight before me.

Psalm 1:6 – For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Application:

  • ·         Normally the righteous are prosperous and happy, but sometimes it is the wicked who are strong and prosperous, temporary though that may be.
  • ·         The “wife of noble character” is valued who fears the Lord and is therefore wise.
  • ·         The psalmist prays that God will so direct him that his enemies will have no grounds for malicious accusations.
  • ·         May the way down which you lead me be straight, level and smooth, free from obstacles and temptations.

I Love

Proverbs 8:15-17 – By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

1 Samuel 2:30 – “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

John 14:21,23 – Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”… Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Matthew 7:7 – “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Proverbs 4:6 – Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

Proverbs 2:1-5 – My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Application:

  • ·         Spiritual privileges bring responsibilities and obligations; they are not to be treated as irrevocable rights.
  • ·         Love for Christ and keeping His commands cannot be separated. The love of the Father cannot be separated from that of the Son.
  • ·         Love and obedience are linked.
  • ·         Persistent prayer is emphasized.
  • ·         To love wisdom is to prosper; to hate wisdom is to “love death”.
  • ·         “Knowledge of God” involves having a personal relationship with God and knowing what He is teaching.
  • ·         Wisdom enables one to face trials with “pure joy”. Wisdom is not just acquired information but practical insight with spiritual implications.
